iPhone Duo Thoughts

I’ll start up by saying that the just announced iPhone Duo is exactly the device that I want. Currently, I have an iPhone, iPad Mini, and MacBook Air. I do a lot of reading on my iPhone mainly because it is impossible for me to bring my iPad with me unless I have a bag. I generally have my iPhone in my pocket, so even if I’m at home, I’ll end up reading on my phone because I left my iPad in my bag or upstairs or somewhere where I’m not.

I don’t do much work on my phone and don’t do any on my iPad. That’s what my MacBook is for. I have considered getting one of the Android flavors of a foldable, but it wasn’t that important to me to spend the money on a second phone. Plus, I’m not an Instagram or TikTok user. The odd shape of the front screen doesn’t matter to me.

I listen to a few tech podcasts, and all I have heard is complaints about what the Duo doesn’t have. Worse cameras, difficult to use with one hand, only for right-handed people. Whatever. These are genuine concerns but really impossible to truly have if you haven’t been able to hold one. Plus, there is probably going to be another iOS 27 software release before the device ships to address some of the phantom usability problems.

I know I’m in a small cohort of people who will have this device. It fits everything that I want in a phone. I want a phone that sometimes is an iPad. I’ll keep my iPad by my chair in my office and will still use it for reading. It just won’t go anywhere. I’ll post an update in late October once I have been able to use it for a week or so.
